Flying Circus in the mountains- High Sierra regatta 2025

First of all, we’d like to give a big thanks to Sydney Moore for keeping the fleet up to speed and organized at the event and camping/berthing logistics! We ended up with a very nice site in the shade at Deer Creek, walking distance to the marina.

The Race committee did a great job getting 5 quality races in with solid #1 conditions both days. Racing was extremely close and we ended up sailing overlapped with other boats most of each race. Our team of Melinda at the helm, me trimming, longtime friend Jon Stewart in the pit and new crew Liz Murphy on the bow, gelled pretty quickly after a brief practice Friday afternoon.  We were able to hit the line on the first race Saturday ready to go.

On Saturday the wind was very shifty with gains to be had playing the shifts mid lake on the beats and watching for streaky puffs on the run. Despite our practice, we did manage to race in every position in the fleet at some point!

Sunday’s breeze settled into a more typical Huntington Lake conditions with the long starboard off the line to the far side of the lake - then tacking up that shore, which paid dividends. The Z legs were not included this year which allowed a little rest on the runs.

Going into Sunday’s last race the top five boats were very close. Trading the lead with Scosh on the beat had them lead us around the top mark.  We had tight racing with three boats abreast on the last downwind leg with Lowly worm 2.0 and Skosh, which was really fun with some lead changes back and forth. The very tight scores reflected the tight racing all weekend.

The camping was amazing and the sailing conditions do not get any better so if you didn’t come this year put it on your calendar for next!
